Mount Soledad National Veteran’s Memorial

Join Mt. Soledad Memorial Association this Memorial Day as they honor the service and sacrifice of Seaman Lakiba Nicole Palmer and her 16 fellow sailors who lost their lives during the terrorist attack on USS Cole on October 12, 2000.

After graduating San Diego HS in 1996, Seaman Palmer entered the Navy and was later assigned to the USS Cole. In October of 2000 the Cole was docked at port in Aden Yemen and attacked by an explosive laden boat driven by Al Queda terrorists that blew out a hole in the port side of the ship killing 17 Sailors.

They will unveil two plaques – one honoring Lakiba Palmer and the other will list all 17 crew who were killed that day.

The annual ceremony at Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial pays tribute to all veterans, former Prisoners of War, and those still listed as Missing in Action, with special recognition of the USS Cole heroes whose ultimate sacrifice reminds us of the true cost of freedom. Through remembrance and education, we ensure that the legacy of our fallen service members lives on. They invite veterans, families, community members, and all who wish to pay their respects to attend this solemn and meaningful ceremony.
